Biography
Leo Fall was born on 2 February 1873 in Olmütz, the son of the Jewish Austro-Hungarian military bandmaster Moritz Fall, and died on 16 September 1925 in Vienna. After school in Lemberg he studied at the Vienna Conservatory but had to abandon his composition studies in 1892 for financial reasons, afterward working as an operetta conductor in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. From 1906 he lived in Vienna, where operettas such as Der fidele Bauer, Die Dollarprinzessin and Die Rose von Stambul made him one of the internationally most successful stage composers of his time. His younger brother Richard Fall was also a composer and conductor; after fleeing the Nazis, he was deported from the Drancy camp to Auschwitz in 1943 and died there in 1945. Leo Fall himself was given an honorary grave at Vienna's Central Cemetery.
