At Cannes he won the Grand Prix for “Breaking the Waves” (1996) and the Palme d’Or for “Dancer in the Dark” (2000); his later films include “Dogville” (2003), “Melancholia” (2011) and “Nymphomaniac” (2013). The stage version of “The Kingdom”, titled “Hospital der Geister” in German, was first performed in German at Schauspielhaus Graz in 2023 and opened at Deutsches Theater Berlin in 2025.
