Biography
Lars Norén was born in Stockholm in 1944 and first made his name as a poet; his first collection appeared in 1963. His first stage play, "Fursteslickaren", premiered at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in 1973, and his breakthrough came in the early 1980s with the partly autobiographical family dramas "Natten är dagens mor" and "Kaos är granne med Gud". Later he turned to people on the margins of society, as in "Personkrets 3:1", with which Thomas Ostermeier opened his directorship of Berlin's Schaubühne in 2000. From 1993 Norén also directed; he led the drama division of Riksteatern, the Swedish national touring theatre, and from 2009 the Folkteatern in Gothenburg. In all he wrote well over a hundred plays, and his late work – such as the trilogy on ageing that includes "Andante" (premiered 2019) – revolves around time, memory and death. His awards include the Swedish Academy Nordic Prize (2003) and the Bellman Prize (2012); Norén died in January 2021.
