Biography

Larry Kramer was born in 1935 and graduated from Yale College with a degree in English before working as a screenwriter, earning an Oscar nomination for his adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love. In 1982 he co-founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis, but left the organization in 1983 amid disputes over what he saw as its overly cautious response to the emerging AIDS crisis. His largely autobiographical play The Normal Heart, first staged in 1985, dramatizes exactly this experience and the epidemic's early years in New York. In 1987 he also founded the activist group ACT UP, which used confrontational protest to press for AIDS research and care. Kramer died in 2020 at the age of 84.
