Biography
Kurt Atterberg was born on 12 December 1887 in Gothenburg and died on 15 February 1974 in Stockholm. After training as an electrical engineer, he worked at the Swedish Patent Office from 1912 to 1968, latterly in a senior position, while composing nine symphonies, five operas and two ballets. His Sixth Symphony won an international composition competition in 1928, earning it the nickname "Dollar Symphony". From 1924 to 1947 he headed the Society of Swedish Composers; his cooperation with Nazi cultural organisations in the 1930s was disputed after the war, though an official inquiry found insufficient evidence for the allegations.
