Biography

Krzysztof Penderecki was born on 23 November 1933 in Dębica and studied composition at the Kraków Academy of Music. He gained international attention in 1960 with his orchestral work "Anaklasis" at the Donaueschingen Festival and with avant-garde sound-mass compositions such as "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima". From the 1960s onward he turned increasingly to more traditional forms, composing operas such as "The Devils of Loudun" alongside large sacred works including the St Luke Passion and the Polish Requiem. From 1972 to 1987 he served as rector of the Kraków Academy of Music, and his work earned him honours including the Prince of Asturias Award and the Praemium Imperiale. He died on 29 March 2020 in Kraków.
