Biography
Kristof Magnusson was born in Hamburg in 1976; after training as a church musician he studied at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig, playwriting at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin and Icelandic literature in Reykjavík. He made his name with the comedy “Männerhort”, which opened at Schauspiel Bonn in 2003 under the direction of Kay Voges, has since been staged by numerous theatres in Germany and abroad and was adapted for the cinema in 2014. His other plays include “Der totale Kick” (2001) and “Sushi für alle” (2011); together with Gunnar Klack he wrote the comedies “Apokalypse Miau” (Volkstheater Wien, 2022) and “In bester Lage” (Schauspiel Köln, 2026). As a novelist he has published, among others, “Zuhause” (2005), “Das war ich nicht” (2010, longlisted for the German Book Prize), “Arztroman” (2014), “Ein Mann der Kunst” (2020) and “Die Reise ans Ende der Geschichte” (2026). He also translates prose, drama and sagas from Icelandic into German and has taught as a guest at the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among other places. His awards include the Rauris Literature Prize (2006), the Jane Scatcherd Prize for translators (2016) and the Rome Prize of the German Academy Villa Massimo (2023).
