Biography
Kevin Rittberger was born in Stuttgart in 1977 and studied modern German literature, journalism and communication studies at the Free University of Berlin. Since 2004 he has worked as a writer and director at theatres including the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Schauspielhaus Wien, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Residenztheater Munich and the Maxim Gorki Theater. His productions of Dietmar Dath's “Die Abschaffung der Arten” in Berlin and of “Nachrichten aus der ideologischen Antike” after Alexander Kluge in Hamburg earned him the Kurt Hübner Directing Prize in 2010. He was nominated for the Mülheim Dramatists' Prize for “Kassandra oder die Welt als Ende der Vorstellung” (Schauspielhaus Wien, 2011) and “IKI.radikalmensch” (Schauspiel Osnabrück, 2019), and in 2012 he received the Jürgen Bansemer & Ute Nyssen Dramatists' Prize. His other plays include “Schwarzer Block” (Maxim Gorki Theater, 2020), “Der Entrepreneur” (Residenztheater, 2022) and “Gesetze schreddern” (Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, 2024); for Theater Magdeburg he wrote “Wunde Stadt” about the attack on the city's Christmas market, premiered in 2026 in a production by Sebastian Nübling. Rittberger also works as a curator and essayist.
