Biography
Kevin Puts was born in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in Alma, Michigan. He studied at the Eastman School of Music and at Yale, among others with Jacob Druckman, Christopher Rouse and Joseph Schwantner. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2001 and the American Academy in Rome's Rome Prize in 2002. His first opera, 'Silent Night' (premiered 2011 at Minnesota Opera), won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Music; his second opera, 'The Hours', premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 2022. Puts teaches composition at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and is a visiting faculty member at the Juilliard School.
