Biography

Ketan Bhatti was born in New Delhi in 1981, grew up in Bielefeld and studied jazz drums at the Universität der Künste Berlin, where he held a fellowship at the Graduate School for the Arts and Sciences from 2010 to 2012. His music moves between contemporary classical music, electronics, jazz and hip-hop: as a drummer he played with Cyminology and the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, among others, and in 2013 he founded the Trickster Orchestra with Cymin Samawatie, which won the Deutscher Jazzpreis in 2022. Together with his brother Vivan Bhatti he has written incidental music since 2003, above all for productions directed by Nuran David Calis, and since 2009 the music for the breakdance company Flying Steps, whose show “Flying Bach” received a special Echo Klassik award in 2010. The brothers’ music theatre works include “Discount Diaspora” (2011) after Feridun Zaimoglu and “Das schwarze Wasser” (2016) after Roland Schimmelpfennig for the Neuköllner Oper, the opera “Berlin Alexanderplatz” after Döblin, premiered at Theater Bielefeld in 2022, and “Der rote Wal” to a libretto by Markus Winter, premiered at the Staatsoper Stuttgart in 2025. Bhatti won the Karl Hofer Prize in 2008 and, with Cymin Samawatie, the German Music Authors’ Prize in the category of intercultural composition in 2023.
