Biography
Kay Pollak was born in Gothenburg in 1938 and studied statistics at Umeå University, where he obtained a licentiate degree in 1969 and was active in the student theatre as director, writer and actor. From the late 1960s he directed television films and series before making his first feature film, “Elvis! Elvis!”, based on Maria Gripe. For “Barnens ö” (Children's Island, 1980), based on P. C. Jersild, he won the Guldbagge Award for Best Director; like the later “Älska mej” (Love Me!, 1986), the film was shown in competition at the Berlinale. He then withdrew from filmmaking for a long period, writing books on personal development and giving seminars, before returning in 2004 with “Så som i himmelen” (As It Is in Heaven), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; the sequel “Så ock på jorden” followed in 2015. Together with Carin Pollak he wrote the book for the musical “Så som i himmelen”, which premiered at the Oscarsteatern in Stockholm in 2018.
