Biography

Karol Szymanowski was born in 1882 in Tymoszówka, then part of the Russian Empire, and trained at the Warsaw Conservatory. Travels to Italy, North Africa and Vienna shaped his early, impressionist-tinged style, which later evolved under the influence of Stravinsky and Ravel. During the 1920s he turned increasingly to the folk music of the Polish Carpathians, audible for instance in the ballet "Harnasie". His output includes four symphonies, two violin concertos, chamber music, songs, and the operas "Hagith" and "Król Roger". He died in Lausanne in 1937 and is regarded today as the foremost Polish composer of the first half of the twentieth century.
