Karl Kraus

Biography

Karl Kraus was born on 28 April 1874 in Gitschin (Jičín), Bohemia, and grew up from 1877 in Vienna, where his father ran a paper factory. After leaving school in 1892 he studied law and then philosophy and German studies, but abandoned his degree to become a freelance writer. In 1899 he founded the journal "Die Fackel", which from 1911 he wrote entirely by himself, using it for over 37 years to attack double standards, warmongering and the language of the daily press. His multi-part drama "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" turns original documents from the First World War into an indictment of those who profited from it. Kraus died on 12 June 1936 in Vienna.
