Biography
Juli Mahid Carly was born in Baunatal in 1997 and first studied German and history in Göttingen, then directing in Ludwigsburg. For the play “Verbindungsfehler”, in which a repeatedly failing internet connection forces four people in one building to meet face to face, Carly received the Osnabrück Playwrights' Prize in 2019; Rieke Süßkow directed its premiere in Osnabrück. Since then Carly has frequently written and directed their own texts, including pop-culture rewritings of classics such as “Kabale+Liebe” at Theater Konstanz (2023), the high-school musical “Mariah Stuart – Heads Will Roll” at Theater der Jungen Welt Leipzig (2024) and “Faust. Der Tragödie nächster Fail” at Theater Konstanz (2025). Carly's production of Till Wiebel's “Vier Piloten” at Schauspielhaus Bochum was nominated for the Faust theatre award in 2025 in the category of direction in theatre for young audiences. In the same year, at the invitation of Theater Magdeburg, Carly wrote the Tokio Hotel-inspired play “Schrei so laut du kannst” and directed its premiere there. Carly also received the Film of the Year award at the FiSH festival in Rostock in 2020 for the documentary “Weißabgleich” and a Wortmeldungen essay prize for emerging writers in 2022.
