Biography
Joseph Weigl was born in Eisenstadt in 1766 and died in Vienna in 1846. The son of the Esterházy cellist Joseph Franz Weigl and a godchild of Joseph Haydn, he grew up in Vienna and studied with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri. He became Kapellmeister at the Vienna court theatre in 1792 and served as deputy court Kapellmeister from 1827 to 1838. His best-known work is the opera "Die Schweizer Familie" (1809); in 1805 he also completed "Vestas Feuer", a libretto project that Beethoven had begun and abandoned.
