Joseph Martin Kraus

1756 – 1792 · German-Swedish

Biography

Joseph Martin Kraus was born in Miltenberg am Main in 1756 and attended the Jesuit grammar school in Mannheim before moving to Stockholm in 1778. There he became court Kapellmeister to King Gustav III and, from 1782, undertook a multi-year study tour of Europe funded by the king, during which he met Christoph Willibald Gluck and Joseph Haydn, among others. Back in Stockholm he directed the Royal Academy of Music and composed operas, symphonies and church music in a dramatic style, unusually intense for its time, modelled on Gluck. Because his dates of birth and death closely echo Mozart's, he is often called the "Swedish Mozart"; he died in Stockholm in 1792.
