Biography
Josef Hader was born in 1962 in Waldhausen im Strudengau in Upper Austria and made his first attempts at cabaret at the Stiftsgymnasium Melk. After winning the Salzburger Stier in 1985 for his show “Der Witzableiter und das Feuer”, he gave up his teacher-training studies in German and history; his breakthrough came in 1988 with “Biagn oder Brechen”, and around half a million people saw his solo show “Privat” (1994). With Alfred Dorfer he wrote the tragicomedy “Indien” in 1991, which earned both of them the Austrian Kleinkunstpreis in 1992 and was filmed by Paul Harather in 1993; the play “Husten” followed in 2006. As lead actor and co-writer he shaped the film adaptations of Wolf Haas's Brenner crime novels, from “Komm, süßer Tod” (2000) to “Das ewige Leben” (2015), and in 2016 he played Stefan Zweig in “Vor der Morgenröte”. He made his debut as a film director in 2017 with “Wilde Maus”, which screened in competition at the Berlinale, followed by “Andrea lässt sich scheiden” in 2024.
