Biography
Josef Bayer was born on 6 March 1852 in Vienna and died there on 12 March 1913. From the age of seven he attended the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, studying violin under Joseph Hellmesberger the elder, harmony under Anton Bruckner, and composition under Felix Otto Dessoff. He joined the Vienna Court Opera orchestra in 1870, became its conductor (Hofopernkapellmeister) in 1883, and directed the imperial ballet company from 1885 until his death. His output comprises around 19 operettas and 70 ballets, alongside songs, dances and marches; his best-known work, the ballet "Die Puppenfee" (1888), had received more than 800 performances at the Vienna State Opera by 1999. After retiring in 1898 he continued to conduct, touring widely across Europe and in the United States.
