Biography

John Osborne was born on 12 December 1929 in London. He initially worked as an actor and co-wrote his first play, 'The Devil Inside Him', with Stella Linden in 1950. With 'Look Back in Anger' (1956), first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in London, he became the first of the writers known as the 'Angry Young Men' and gave post-war British society a new, direct voice on stage. In 1957 came 'The Entertainer', about a fading music-hall comedian, a role Laurence Olivier played on stage and screen. With the historical drama 'Luther' (1961) Osborne achieved a further international success that went on to win the Tony Award on Broadway. He died on 24 December 1994 in Shropshire.
