Biography

John Ford was baptised on 17 April 1586 in Ilsington in the English county of Devon. He entered Exeter College, Oxford, in 1601 and joined the Middle Temple law school in London in 1602, remaining associated with it, apart from a suspension between 1606 and 1608, until at least 1617. As a playwright he first worked in collaboration with Thomas Dekker and William Rowley, on plays such as 'The Witch of Edmonton' (1621) and 'The Sun's Darling' (1624). His independent works include the tragedies ''Tis Pity She's a Whore' and 'The Broken Heart', noted for their psychologically dense characters. Ford died around 1639.
