Biography
John Corigliano was born on 16 February 1938 in New York and studied at Columbia University and the Manhattan School of Music under, among others, Otto Luening, Vittorio Giannini and Paul Creston. He has taught at the Juilliard School since 1991, after earlier teaching posts at Lehman College and New York University. His best-known works include the opera The Ghosts of Versailles (1991), his First Symphony (1989), written in memory of AIDS victims, and the score for The Red Violin. He won the Academy Award for the latter in 2000 and the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his Second Symphony in 2001, and several of his works have also received Grammy Awards. Corigliano is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
