Biography

John Boynton Priestley was born on 13 September 1894 in Bradford, Yorkshire, the son of a socialist schoolmaster, and served on the front line during the First World War. He first made his name as a novelist with "The Good Companions" (1929) before turning increasingly to the theatre in the 1930s. Inspired by J. W. Dunne's theory of time, he wrote a series of so-called "time plays", including "Time and the Conways" (1937) and his most enduringly performed work, "An Inspector Calls" (1945). During the Second World War he gained huge popularity with his BBC radio broadcasts "Postscripts". Priestley died on 14 August 1984 in Alveston, Warwickshire.
