Johann Joseph Fux

1660 – 1741 · Austrian

Biography

Johann Joseph Fux was born in 1660, the son of a farmer, in Hirtenfeld in Styria, and came to Vienna after studying in Graz and Ingolstadt. From 1696 he worked as organist at the Vienna Schottenkirche before Emperor Leopold I appointed him imperial court composer in 1698; in 1715, under Charles VI, he rose to Hofkapellmeister, the highest musical office at the imperial court. Alongside around 18 operas and numerous masses and oratorios, he wrote the counterpoint treatise 'Gradus ad Parnassum' in 1725, which shaped composers from Haydn to Mozart. Fux is regarded as the leading figure of the Austrian musical Baroque and died in Vienna in 1741.
