Johann Christian Bach

1735 – 1782 · German

Biography

Johann Christian Bach was born in Leipzig in 1735, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, and received his first musical training from his father and, after his father's death, from his half-brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in Berlin. In 1754 he moved to Italy, studied with Padre Martini in Bologna, and in 1760 became sub-organist at Milan Cathedral, converting to Catholicism. With operas such as Artaserse (1760) and Catone in Utica (1761) he made his name as an opera composer in Turin and Naples. In 1762 he moved to London as composer for the King's Theatre, where he wrote further operas, founded the Bach-Abel Concerts with Carl Friedrich Abel in 1765, and served as music teacher to Queen Charlotte. In 1764 he taught the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for several months and had a lasting influence on his early style. He died in London in 1782.
