Biography
Johann Anton Leisewitz was born in 1752 in Hanover and died in 1806 in Braunschweig. From 1770 to 1774 he studied law in Göttingen, where in 1774 he joined the poets' circle known as the "Göttinger Hain." That same year he wrote his only completed drama, "Julius von Tarent," which appeared anonymously in 1776 and quickly earned him considerable literary fame. He then devoted himself entirely to a legal career, working as a lawyer and civil servant in Braunschweig, becoming tutor to the hereditary prince in 1786 and rising to Privy Counsellor of Justice and president of the supreme health board. He never produced a second literary work; his will even ordered the destruction of his literary papers.
