Biography
Johan Ludvig Heiberg was born in Copenhagen in 1791 and earned his doctorate in aesthetics there in 1817. From 1822 to 1825 he taught Danish language and literature at the University of Kiel, where he engaged closely with Hegel’s philosophy, which later shaped his criticism and dramatic theory. After returning to Copenhagen, he introduced vaudeville, a form he brought back from Paris, to the Danish stage and wrote numerous plays for it, including the 1828 festival play Elverhøj with music by Friedrich Kuhlau. In 1831 he married the actress Johanne Luise Pätges, who became the leading Danish stage performer of her generation. Heiberg died at his estate of Bonderup in 1860.
