Biography
Joe Orton was born John Kingsley Orton in Leicester on 1 January 1933 and studied at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1950 to 1953, where he met his future partner Kenneth Halliwell. In 1962 the couple was sentenced to prison for stealing and defacing library books. From 1964 Orton achieved international success with plays such as "Entertaining Mr Sloane," "Loot" and "What the Butler Saw," whose black comedy openly confronted social taboos. On 9 August 1967 he was beaten to death in London by Halliwell, who then took his own life.
