Biography
Joaquín Espín y Guillén was born in Velilla de Medinaceli, Soria, in 1812 and died in Madrid in 1882. He studied music in Burgos and Bordeaux and worked in Madrid as organist of the Royal Chapel, as choral and orchestral director at the Teatro Real, and as a professor at the Conservatorio María Cristina. In 1842 he co-founded, with Mariano Soriano Fuertes, the journal "La Iberia Musical y Literaria", one of the first Spanish music periodicals. An advocate of an independent Spanish national opera, he composed works including "Padilla" (1845) and the successful zarzuela "Carlos Broschi" (1853).
