Biography
Yevhen Stankovych was born on 19 September 1942 in what was then Hungarian Szolyva, today Svaliava in Ukraine. He first studied at the Lviv Conservatory under Adam Soltys and, from 1965 to 1970, at the Kyiv Conservatory under Borys Lyatoshynsky and Myroslav Skoryk. Since 1998 he has taught composition at the National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv and, from 2004 to 2010, co-chaired the National Union of Composers of Ukraine together with Skoryk. His extensive output includes six symphonies, several ballets and the operas “When the Fern Blooms” and “Cassandra”; he received the Shevchenko Prize in 1977 and was named Hero of Ukraine in 2008.
