Biography

Yevgeny Lvovich Schwartz was born on 21 October 1896 in Kazan and died on 15 January 1958 in Leningrad. After some years as an actor, he turned to writing and produced around thirty plays, mostly fairy-tale dramas based on motifs from Hans Christian Andersen and other sources. Under Soviet censorship he used the fairy-tale form to voice veiled criticism of tyranny, opportunism and conformism, which brought several of his plays — including "The Dragon" and "The Shadow" — outright performance bans. A number of his works were adapted for film and set to music by composers such as Paul Dessau; posthumously, Schwartz became one of the most widely performed Soviet playwrights at home and abroad.
