Biography
Jean-Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer was born on 13 October 1785 in Toulouse and died on 14 October 1852 in Paris. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Charles-Simon Catel, winning a second prize in piano there in 1803. In 1815 he joined the Paris Opéra orchestra as a timpanist and later became its chorus master (chef de chant); he also taught singing as a professor at the Conservatoire and was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1840. Alongside ballet scores such as Proserpine (1818), Zémire et Azor (1824) and La Tempête (1834), he is best remembered today for La Sylphide (1832), composed for the dancer Marie Taglioni.
