1957 – 1995 · French

Biography

Jean-Luc Lagarce was born in Héricourt on 14 February 1957 and studied philosophy and dramatic art in Besançon. In 1978 he founded the Théâtre de la Roulotte, with which he increasingly staged his own texts alongside the classics. His work, marked by repeated, self-correcting sentences, comprises around 25 plays, including "Juste la fin du monde" ("It's Only the End of the World"), written in Berlin in 1990. Lagarce, who had been HIV-positive for years, died in Paris on 30 September 1995; posthumous success made him one of the most performed playwrights in France during the 2000s.
