Biography
Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville was born on 25 December 1711 in Narbonne and died on 8 October 1772 in Belleville, near Paris. In 1733 he moved to Paris, where he quickly made a name for himself as a violinist and became a member of the Concert Spirituel; the favour of Madame de Pompadour helped advance his career at court. He became sous-maître in 1740 and intendant of the royal chapel at Versailles in 1744, and from 1755 to 1762 he also directed the Concert Spirituel. Alongside sacred motets, he composed several successful stage works, including "Le carnaval du Parnasse" (1749), "Titon et l'Aurore" (1753) and "Thésée" (1765).
