Biography

Jean Giraudoux was born on 29 October 1882 in Bellac and studied at the École normale supérieure in Paris. He worked as a teacher, journalist and diplomat before becoming, from the late 1920s, the most widely performed playwright of his generation with plays such as "Amphitryon 38" (1929), "Intermezzo" (1933) and "The Trojan War Will Not Take Place" (1935). Nearly all his major plays were premiered by Louis Jouvet, with whom he maintained a long artistic partnership. After the outbreak of war in 1940 he briefly headed the French government’s information office before withdrawing from public life. He died on 31 January 1944 in Paris, officially of food poisoning; his last play, "The Madwoman of Chaillot", was staged only posthumously.
