Biography
Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at the rectory in Steventon, Hampshire; her father, George Austen, was a clergyman who largely educated her at home. As a teenager she wrote stories and short plays and took part in the family's amateur theatricals. After years in Bath and Southampton, she lived in Chawton from 1809. During her lifetime Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815) appeared, always without her name; Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published only after her death on 18 July 1817 in Winchester. With her ironic, precise view of marriage, property and social standing and her early use of free indirect discourse, she is now regarded as one of the most important authors in the English language.
