Biography

Jakov Gotovac was born in Split in 1895 and received his first musical training there before continuing his studies in Vienna with Joseph Marx from 1920. From 1923 to 1958 he worked as a conductor at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, also leading several choral ensembles. As a composer he developed a late-Romantic, nationally inflected style drawing on Dalmatian folk tunes, though rarely quoting them directly. His best-known work, the comic opera "Ero der Schelm", premiered in 1935 and became his greatest success, staged at more than eighty European theatres. Gotovac died in Zagreb in 1982.
