Biography

Jakob Hein was born in Leipzig in 1971, studied medicine in Berlin, Stockholm and Boston and received his doctorate from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2000. Alongside a medical career in psychiatry, first at the Charité and later as a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry, he read regularly from 1998 at the Berlin reading stage Reformbühne Heim & Welt. His first book “Mein erstes T-Shirt” (2001) was followed by titles including “Herr Jensen steigt aus” (2006), “Die Orient-Mission des Leutnant Stern” (2018), “Hypochonder leben länger” (2020) and “Der Hypnotiseur” (2022). For the theatre he wrote “Liebe ist ein hormonell bedingter Zustand”, staged at Schauspiel Essen in 2010, and “Johnny Chicago oder Super ist gar kein Ausdruck” for the Volksbühne Berlin (2011). His novel “Wie Grischa mit einer verwegenen Idee beinahe den Weltfrieden auslöste” was published by Galiani Berlin in 2025 and won him the Grimmelshausen Prize that year; Deutsches Theater Berlin is premiering a stage version in 2026.
