Biography
Jacques Ibert was born on 15 August 1890 in Paris and died there on 5 February 1962. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1910 to 1914 under Gabriel Fauré and Paul Vidal, among others, and won the Prix de Rome in 1919. His style moved freely between Impressionism, Stravinskian neoclassicism and the wit of the Groupe des Six without settling on a single school. Alongside operas and orchestral works he composed numerous film scores and, with interruptions, directed the French Academy at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1937 to 1960. In 1955/56 he simultaneously headed the Paris Opéra and the Opéra-Comique. In 1956 he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
