Biography
Jacopo Peri was born on 20 August 1561 and, as a child, joined the choir of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence; he trained as a singer and organist and served, among other posts, as organist at the Badia Fiorentina. Nicknamed 'Il Zazzerino' for his thick head of hair, he entered the service of the Florentine Medici court in 1588 and also worked at times for the court of Mantua. Within the circle of the Florentine Camerata around Jacopo Corsi and Ottavio Rinuccini, he developed, in 'La Dafne' (1598) and 'Euridice' (1600), the continuous, speech-following declamation regarded as the starting point of opera. He died in Florence on 12 August 1633.
