Jacopo Foroni

1825 – 1858 · Italian

Biography

Jacopo Foroni was born on 26 July 1825 in Verona, the son of composer and conductor Domenico Foroni, and trained by his father and by Alberto Mazzucato in Milan. After the premiere of his first opera, 'Margherita', in Milan in 1848, he took part in the Milan uprising against Austrian rule; when it failed, he left Italy and worked as a conductor for touring Italian opera companies in France, Belgium and the Netherlands before arriving in Sweden in 1849. That same year he became principal conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, where he led Swedish premieres of works by Bellini, Donizetti and the young Verdi, as well as the first music by Wagner heard in Sweden in 1856. He introduced himself to Swedish audiences with 'Cristina, regina di Svezia' (1849); shortly before his death he was working on 'Advokaten Pathelin', the first opera in the Swedish language. Foroni died of cholera in Stockholm on 8 September 1858.
