Biography

J. R. R. Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892 in Bloemfontein in the then Orange Free State and grew up near Birmingham after his family returned to England in 1896. He studied English language and literature at Exeter College, Oxford, served as a lieutenant with the Lancashire Fusiliers in the First World War and took part in the Battle of the Somme. From 1925 he held the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professorship of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College and from 1945 the Merton Professorship of English Language and Literature at Oxford, and belonged with C. S. Lewis to the literary circle known as the Inklings. His children's book “The Hobbit” appeared in 1937 and the multi-volume novel “The Lord of the Rings” in 1954–55; his son Christopher published the unfinished “The Silmarillion” posthumously in 1977. Tolkien died on 2 September 1973 in Bournemouth and is regarded as one of the most influential authors of modern fantasy literature.
