1818 – 1883 · Russian

Biography

Ivan Turgenev was born in 1818 into a wealthy landowning family in Oryol province and studied in Moscow, St Petersburg and Berlin. Alongside novels such as Fathers and Sons (1862), he wrote several plays in the 1840s and 1850s, of which The Bachelor (1849) and A Month in the Country (written 1850) remain influential today. His story collection A Sportsman's Sketches (1852) is credited with helping to bring about the later emancipation of Russia's serfs. From the 1840s he lived mostly in Western Europe, chiefly in Baden-Baden and Paris, in a close, lifelong association with the singer Pauline Viardot. Turgenev died in 1883 in Bougival, near Paris.
