Biography
Ivan Kotliarevsky was born in Poltava in 1769, attended the local theological seminary and later served in the Russian army. With his burlesque travesty of Virgil's Aeneid, the Eneida (1798), he wrote the first literary work composed entirely in the Ukrainian language, laying the foundation for modern literary Ukrainian. From 1816 he directed the Poltava Free Theatre, for which he wrote the folk play Natalka Poltavka in 1819. The later national poet Taras Shevchenko would call him his literary father. Kotliarevsky died in 1838 in his native Poltava.
