Biography
Ivan Zajc was born in Fiume (now Rijeka) in 1832 and studied composition and orchestration at the Milan Conservatory from 1850 to 1855. In 1870 he moved to Zagreb, where he directed the opera house until 1889 and headed the local conservatory until 1908. With around 1,200 works, including some 20 operas, he ranks among the most prolific composers of his era; his best-known work, the opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski (1876), is regarded as the first Croatian national opera. Zajc died in Zagreb in 1914.
