Biography
Isaac Albéniz was born on 29 May 1860 in Camprodon, Catalonia, and appeared as a child prodigy pianist from the age of four. After studies including spells at the Leipzig Conservatory and in Brussels, he first made his name as a touring concert pianist, before meeting composer Felip Pedrell in 1883 turned him toward Spanish musical nationalism. During the 1890s he lived in London and Paris, where he composed several operas for his patron Francis Money-Coutts, including 'Merlin', intended as the first part of an Arthurian trilogy. With his late piano suite 'Iberia' (1905–1908) he created his most influential work, shaping composers such as Debussy and Ravel. Albéniz died on 18 May 1909 in Cambo-les-Bains, France, of kidney disease.
