Biography
Ion Luca Caragiale was born on 13 February 1852 (Gregorian calendar) in Haimanale near Ploiești into a family of actors. He first worked as a prompter and copyist at the National Theatre Bucharest before turning to journalism for satirical magazines and newspapers. Most of his plays were written between 1878 and 1890, including the 1884 comedy A Lost Letter; from 1888 he also directed the National Theatre Bucharest. After a plagiarism accusation wounded him deeply, he withdrew into voluntary exile in Berlin in 1904, where he died in 1912.
