Biography
Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala in 1918 and worked from early on both as a stage director and as a screenwriter and director in Swedish film. With works such as "The Seventh Seal", "Wild Strawberries" and "Persona" he developed a distinctive, often existential visual language. He won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film three times, for "The Virgin Spring", "Through a Glass Darkly" and "Fanny and Alexander". "Fanny och Alexander" (1982), his semi-autobiographical family epic conceived as a farewell to filmmaking, has since served as the basis for several stage adaptations. In 1997 he was honoured at Cannes as the greatest film director in the history of cinema. Bergman died in 2007 on the Baltic island of Fårö, where he had spent his final decades.
