Ildebrando Pizzetti

1880 – 1968 · Italian

Biography

Ildebrando Pizzetti was born in Parma in 1880, studied at the local conservatory and graduated in 1901. From 1908 to 1924 he lived in Florence, where he also made a name for himself as a music critic, and, together with Ottorino Respighi, Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella, belonged to the so-called "Generazione dell'Ottanta," which sought new forms of expression beyond conventional Italian opera. Pizzetti frequently wrote his own librettos and, in works such as Assassinio nella cattedrale (1958), placed particular emphasis on the fusion of word and music. He died in Rome in 1968.
