Biography

Igor Memic comes from Mostar, left Yugoslavia in 1992 at the age of two and grew up in London. He studied at the University of Liverpool and at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where he completed the Writing for Stage programme. His first full-length play, “Old Bridge”, which draws on the war in his home town, won the twelfth Papatango New Writing Prize in 2020. Papatango Theatre Company premiered the play at London's Bush Theatre in October 2021, and in 2022 it won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre. The same year he was named Most Promising Playwright at the Off West End Awards and, jointly with Zadie Smith, at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards. In John Birke's German translation, the play received its German-language premiere as “Die Brücke von Mostar” at Theater Oberhausen in September 2023.
