Biography
Ignaz Brüll was born in 1846 in Prostějov (Proßnitz), Moravia, into a Jewish merchant family, and grew up from 1850 in Vienna, where he studied piano with Julius Epstein, a friend of Johannes Brahms. As a virtuoso pianist and composer, he quickly became part of Vienna's musical life; Brahms particularly valued him as a partner for four-hand piano performances of his latest works. The resounding success of his opera "Das goldene Kreuz," first performed in Berlin in 1875, made Brüll widely known and even earned him a personal compliment from Emperor Wilhelm I. From 1881 he also directed the Horak Piano School in Vienna; he died in Vienna in 1907.
